Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls' School

In the summer of 1940, the Maharaja of Jaipur Sawai Man Singh brought home Princess Gayatri Devi, as his bride. Her concern for the education of the local court women led her and the Maharaja to found the school. HH Sawai Man Singh ordered the Prime Minister Sir Mirza Ismail and the Education and Finance Minister, Rao Bahadur Amarnath Atal, to allot land and plan the school.

A leading All Girls Day cum Residential school, MGD was founded on 12 August 1943 on the lines of the British Public School pattern. It became the first Girls' public school to be accepted as a member of the Public School Council of India Conference (IPSC) way back in 1950. It now offers both the Indian Central Board for Secondary Education and Cambridge curricula.

THE FOUNDER

Her Highness Maharani Gayatri Devi

Maharani Gayatri Devi was born on 23 May 1919, in London to Maharaja Jitendra Narayan and Maharani Indira Devi of Cooch Behar. The third Maharani of Jaipur from 1940-1949 was the most powerful, elegant, stylish, outspoken, bold, compassionate, independent and modern royal queen of India who did not fear speaking her mind. A politician, a social worker, who was a fashion icon known for her elegant sense of style, and who never shied away from flaunting her massive collection of six yards of sheer elegance-saree Her charm, beauty, and grace, forever a subject of awe and admiration, remain unmatched. She was the "People's Princess"; fondly called "Ayesha" by her friends,

For a conservative era, the Maharani made strides for women not only with her unique take on traditional Indian style, but also with a fierce attitude towards living a life of purpose well past her days as the Maharani of Jaipur. She advocated against the practice of purdah, opened several all girls' schools and was elected not once but three times into political office, even setting a Guinness World Record with her majority win. Today she is remembered for her intellect as much as for her beauty and style. Truly an inspiring woman, a role model for life, she was described by Vogue as one of the ten most beautiful women in the world.
